Starting in 2013, CRA and Revenue Quebec are introducing new changes to the EFILE program. As part of their continuing initiative towards a fully electronic tax system, EFILE professionals who send ten or more returns by mail that were eligible to EFILE will face penalties. CRA has already indicated they may impose the following fines:
- $25 per return filed on behalf of an individual
- $100 per return filed on behalf of a corporation
Revenue Quebec may impose similar penalties. It’s recommended to encourage all customers to have their returns sent by EFILE if at all possible, as it is possible the taxpayer in the future may also face penalties themselves. Sending returns electronically is secure, less prone to error, and most importantly, quicker to process. For more information, please consult Canada Revenue Agency and/or Revenue Quebec.
