Important CRA Update: EFILE No Longer Accepting Individual (T1) Authorizations Starting July 15, 2025

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has announced an important change that impacts how tax professionals submit authorization requests for individual (T1) clients.

Effective July 15, 2025, authorization requests for individuals will no longer be accepted through EFILE. Any requests submitted this way will be automatically rejected with Error Message T864.

As part of the CRA’s ongoing commitment to improving service delivery, the Authorization Request service in Represent a Client has been enhanced. Specifically, the five-day processing time for the Alternative process has been removed.

Enhancing Security and Protecting Taxpayer Information

This change reflects the CRA’s continued efforts to:

  • Improve service efficiency and delivery
  • Strengthen identity verification
  • Increase confidence in the protection of taxpayer information
  • Representatives are also encouraged to maintain strong verification protocols to ensure they are acting on behalf of verified clients.

What does this mean for tax professionals?

Representatives can now obtain instant access to their clients’ accounts using the enhanced Authorization Request service, provided certain conditions are met.

To gain instant access to an Individual’s CRA account using the Alternative process:

  • You must use the Authorization Request service available in Represent a Client.
  • You must provide information from the Individual’s Notice of Assessment that was sent to them at least six months ago.
  • Alternative Authorization Method

Tax professionals can also encourage their clients to log in to My Account on the CRA website and authorize a representative directly. This client-initiated method is secure, fast, and fully CRA-compliant.
